CLEAN WATER

Access to clean drinking water is a national and global problem that affects people regardless of socioeconomic status, though it disproportionately affects those living in impoverished or rural areas. Almost everything we do to advance our world has a negative impact on clean water supplies, including industrial and agricultural practices as well as household chores like laundry and showering. I grew up drinking water from a well, so while it was free of some problems, over the years our supply was fraught with other issues, including the main well drying up. Imagine waking up one morning with brown sludge dripping from the faucet into the kitchen sink. I love the idea my grandparents had on the Wehri Farm to build a cistern, which collected rainwater for washing clothes and land irrigation, but given other mounting environmental concerns, like air pollution, a cistern is not a tenable solution for most people.

One solution to having clean water at home, regardless of having city or well water, is a reverse-osmosis system at the tap, which puts water for cooking and drinking through three stages of filtration. The first filtration is usually a carbon filter, which reduces disinfection by-products and volatile organic compounds. The subsequent filtrations remove chemical contaminants like nitrates, perchlorates, arsenic, lead, toxic fluorinated chemicals, and hexavalent chromium, which none of us want in our water. But alas, no system is perfect. It’s not wise to install a whole-house system for several reasons. It not only removes chlorine, which can be a problem for bacteria growth in water pipes, but also removes essential minerals like magnesium, calcium, and iron. The reverse-osmosis process also wastes a lot of water, about three times as much as it treats; that’s why a tap system only in the kitchen might be the most economical and practical for your household.
